Course Syllabus and Outline:

8:00 AM           Session 1: When is Treatment Required and What Needs to be Treated
John Teravskis, QSP/QSD, QISP, CPESC
WGR Southwest, Inc.
John will talk about requirements in the Construction, Industrial, and MS4 Permits that specify the discharger treat storm water runoff.  He will discuss sizing criteria, approval process, and professional certification requirements.  This session will set the basis for the following treatment technology classes.

9:00 AM           Session 2: Active Treatment at Construction Sites
Vernon Slater, QSP/QSD, CPESC
Active Treatment Systems, Inc.
Vern will show how flocculants are used to reduce turbidity and remove fine sediment particles suspended in water at a construction site or de-watering project.  He will demonstrate the use of Chitosan Acetate and show how it uses electrochemistry to remove suspended particles.  ATS, Inc. will have an actual treatment control system present that can be toured.

10:00 AM        Session 3: Removing Industrial Pollutants from Storm Water
Brendan Coyne
Clear Creek Systems, Inc.
Brendan will talk about tough to remove industrial pollutants such as metal and hydrocarbons and what technologies and medias can be used to absorb these pollutants.  He will have some examples of the different media types and a demonstration of a sand filter system.

11:00 AM        Session 4: Cleaning Runoff from a Municipality – Part 1
Mike Garcia
Bio Clean, A Forterra Company
Mike will talk about a treatment system that can be used to meet the municipal post-construction standards requirements.  This low impact development technology can be used even in environments where traditional infiltration and bioretention are not feasible.

Lunch –  12:00 – 12:45 PM

12:45 PM         Session 5: Cleaning Runoff from a Municipality – Part 2
Mike Garcia
Bio Clean, A Forterra Company
Mike will talk about treating storm water runoff for trash with full capture and drain inlet technologies that are approved by the Water Board.  There will be demonstrations of these technologies.

1:45 PM           Session 6: Using Compost to Treat Storm Water – Part 1
Bryan Hofmann
Filtrexx International
Bryan Hofmann and the WGR QSPs will demonstrate several techniques to use Filtrexx Siltsoxx to treat storm water at construction sites, including WGR’s treatment train demonstration.

2:45 PM           Session 7: Using Compost to Treat Storm Water – Part 2
Bryan Hofmann
Filtrexx International
Bryan Hofmann and the WGR QISPs will talk about using Filtrexx at industrial sites to control metals, hydrocarbons, and nutrients.  Bryan will demonstrate Filtrexx’s StormExx drain inlet filter device which allows a sample to be collected after the BMP.  We will finish the day with a field trip to a nearby industrial facility where a very innovative system is being used with Filtrexx Siltsoxx as a key component of the batch-style water treatment system.
